Product Story
The original Nauvoo Temple, the second built by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was constructed between 1841 and 1846 on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. It served as a central place for early temple ordinances, including baptisms for the dead, endowments, and sealings, and played a vital role in the spiritual life of early Church members. Its exterior featured distinctive symbolic stonework, including moonstones at the base, sunstones along the walls, and starstones near the top, representing a progression from earthly life toward celestial glory. After members were forced to leave Nauvoo, the temple was damaged by arson in 1848 and further destroyed by a tornado in 1850, leaving it in ruins. More than a century later, a faithful reconstruction was completed, with the new Nauvoo Temple dedicated in 2002 as a tribute to the original builders and their sacrifice.
